Jammer, Jono Heaps receives standing ovation in Minneapolis, USA

If you have been reading the StarJam news of recent months, you’ll be up-to-date with some of the latest USA Jams. Out of the April Jamming trip to California emerged an unexpected, unbelievable invitation to jam in Minneapolis. Scarcely over the jetlag from one trip and some of us were heading away again. Jammers Jono Heaps and Daniel Gourlay broke new territory in our fartherest from New Zealand jam to date. As a part of a fundraising gala for the Starkey Foundation based in Minneapolis, Jono and Daniel charmed and jammed a couple of thousand people in one weekend. Jono sang at both the VIP party at the mansion of Starkey Founder Bill Austin and at the Gala on the following night, Saturday. 16 th June. He sang and played the song he wrote especially for the occasion to a live audience of 1800 which included Sir Jackie Stewart, members of the infamous Osborne family and celebrities from every corner of USA. He received rapturous applause and a standing ovation.

Everywhere Jono sang, Daniel danced. They became know as the singer and the swinger!! You can see copious pictures on the Starkey Foundations website www.sotheworldmayhear.org but here are a couple right now. Other performers on the night included Dionne Warwick, Cathy Sledge and Carl Carlton of ‘Everlasting love” fame. Dare I say none of them received standing ovations?

Jono Heaps, Daniel Gourlay, Marion Gourlay and Julie Bartlett waiting by the looooong limo send to transport them to the VIP party (The photo would be very wide if the whole limo was in the shot). Jono Heaps meets Jay Leno backstage. Dionne Warwick sang before Jono was on. Julie proudly applauses Jono as he receives a standing ovation.

The trip was full of all kinds of surprises including getting stuck in a lift (or should I say elevator) for nearly an hour in the Marriott Hotel in Minneapolis. A more pleasant surprise was the special attention received from the Air New Zealand flight attendants on the final leg of our journey back to New Zealand. By now the word was out about Jono’s great performance and he was invited to sing to all the passengers on the plane through the in flight PA systems before we landed in Auckland. More rapturous applause!!

Our most grateful thanks go to Air New Zealand who sponsored our flights to Minneapolis and back.
