StarJam Stage Show; profile of performers; Monthly StarJam meetings
Today we bring you the much anticipated announcement of THE STARJAM STAGE SHOW. The buzz is out and everyone’s talking about it already. The StarJam Stage Show will be held on Friday 13th May 2005 and will be the first major event to be staged at the brand new TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, in Manukau City, Auckland. The show will be a spectacular extravaganza of dance, music and comedy. A story created largely by the young people themselves will take the audience on an unforgettable journey. A cast of over 200 includes more than 130 young people with disabilities, the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and more than 30 celebrities. StarJam is proud to have been selected as the ‘opener’ to demonstrate the venue’s vision of “showcasing excellence” Ticket sales will open on Monday 14th March and will be available through both StarJam and TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.
The Young Performers
We have met so many young people over the past weeks and heard wonderful singing, dancing and story telling. And there, in fact, is a story behind every young performer - their hopes, their dreams and what they have overcome. We have randomly chosen four of our new performers and we’re sure you would like to hear a little about them.
Christina Cullen, works at Takapuna Library where she works behind the scenes sorting books ready for display on the shelves. Christina, 19, enjoys bike riding and swimming. She also is keen on horse riding and sailing but doesn’t have time to do everything. Her ambition is to develop a career as a dancer and singer on stage.
Olivia Shivas, 11, attends Pasadena Intermediate School in Pt Chevalier. She has many hobbies including drawing, playing violin, having friends over to stay and going shopping! Olivia would like to be a TV or radio presenter.
Khi Chen, 20 is a student at the McLeans Centre, Mt Roskill Grammar School. Khi enjoys playing boccia and also playing drums. He takes regular lessons and is particularly keen on African drumming. Khi led the ‘drum jam’ at the last StarJam meeting.
And here is Natalie Te Paa, aged 9, who attends Homai School for the Blind. Natalie’s teacher says she has perfect pitch. She certainly treated everyone to some very sweet singing at our recent casting session where she showed her versality with songs starting from Edelweiss and going upbeat from there. She also played beautifully on the keyboard.
We are also very fortunate to have met Tim College on our StarJam adventures. Tim will be working with some of the young people who have key roles in the StarJam Stage Show. He has an adventurous spirit and is always looking for new challenges. You can tell, as he has spent the past two summers instructing rock climbing in the USA and is the co-founder of New Zealand’s premier professional wrestling federation.. He left university in 2002 to work with children. We’re so glad you did, Tim!
So hold onto your hats! Rehearsals have started and more news is to come..
Monthly StarJam meetings
We will be continuing our regular meetings held on the last Saturday of every month. The next one is this coming Saturday when we will be all working together on songs for possible inclusion in the big show. At our January meeting, we focused on gathering the young performers’ ideas and thoughts on storylines and themes. Some expressed their ideas colourfully on paper, others got into discussion groups.
No StarJam meeting is complete without at least a little jamming. There was certainly plenty of dancing energy!!

If you are someone who would love to be part of the excitement by assisting at rehearsals or helping out with whatever is required, please pick up the phone and dial (09) 624 4555.
Thanks to all the families, supporters and friends
On behalf of the whole StarJam community.
Kind regards
Julie Bartlett
